The sexual revolution came about in the 1960s with the
idea of “free love” as was promoted by the hippies. During this period, the
awareness of human sexuality was redefined with the introduction of psychedelic
drugs and a counter-culture that discarded conventional ways and brought to the
fore individual freedom. It was at this point in our history we began seeing
nude coeds in the streets. Horny coeds started engaging in open sex in the
streets.
Different expressions started to emerge as new activities
were developed. Free love was conceptualized to mean sex anytime, anywhere and
with anyone without any feelings of guilt. With the introduction of
contraceptive pills, women became liberated. Now they no longer live within the
confines of being just wives and mothers. This placed them in charge of their sex lives. They are now free to engage in coed sex with little or no worries at
all about the consequences.
With the release of the Kinsey report in 1948, the minds
of many Americans were opened to the variety of sexual activities that abound
not only in the USA but also all over the world.
It was at this point in time that gays, bisexuals and
lesbians were first recognized.
As stated in the report, 10% of the population at
that time was gay. That was the very first time that homosexuality came to the
limelight.
Also, it was during this time that a large number of people openly admitted
they were masturbating. Sex at last became a topic for discussion. Another
advance in the subject of sex came in the 1950s. During this period, a clinical
study of Sexual Responses in Humans discussed the topics of pre-come and
vaginal orgasm.
These studies served to pave way for greater expression
of human sexuality and the experimentation on sex and sensuality as an important
part of living life to the fullest. Rock and roll became the language of the
revolution as it began to bring to the fore the hidden desires of adolescents and
adults alike. It will be recalled that the children of this time were called “baby
boomers” and teens, as well as college students were allowed to engage in
sexual experimentation with people of their age, and at other times, older.
In our world of today, researchers have noted that
another form of sexual revolution is about to take place. This is what they
term as the teen sexual revolution. In a TV show in 1991 entitled Doggie,
Howser, M.D. featured the many issues that an 18-year old in today’s society
needs to face.
The show, aimed at preteen and teenage kids showed this
teenager’s life as he gave up his virginity. The episode which featured him
having sex with his teen college girlfriend was also rated highest for the
season. It appears that even in our modern time, the effect of the sexual
revolution in the 1960s is still very much felt. Evidently, baby boomers can
still be found today, and they take their forms as adolescents.
